Surprised on the Way

One of my favorite painting is Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus:
Jesus sits at table with two of his followers. As he blesses the bread, the astonished disciples recognize the risen Christ. A waiter standing near Jesus remains unmoved, oblivious to the miracle in front of him.
The story of Jesus’ appearance on the road to Emmaus emphasizes two moments when the revelation of Jesus takes place. The first is when he explains the Scriptures, the second when he blesses the bread. These are what we have come to call Word and Sacrament, the ways in which Jesus still comes to us. Are we still astonished by the presence of Jesus? Are we amazed by the Scriptures? Are we awestruck by the Holy Communion? And what about seeing Christ in others? Are we surprised to see Jesus in a stranger or in a little child or in a person facing death? Are we astonished by the presence of Jesus, or are we oblivious to him?
We are astonished. The Good News is announced, and we are amazed. Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed!
Read Luke 24:14-34, and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
