Living in nature; Living in Grace

So many things have crossed my mind this week in Brazil. Annie mentioned that some people were concerned about me. They heard about the Brazilian President’s impeachment, economic downturn, and millions of protestors in the streets.  I have only experienced the same smiling faces, welcoming culture, and world-class hospitality that have greeted me on every Brazilian visit. Granted, I usually come in the summer, and it is now Brazil’s fall, so it gets dark earlier.

When Annie was telling me about these concerns, I looked out the window of my 13th floor hotel to describe the beautiful street scene below. As I talked, my eye caught two New World Black Vultures playing on the roof of the building one story below me, across the street. Ah, I thought to myself, some folks might see this as a bad omen – the President’s impeachment and vultures looking over the city. I didn’t see it as an omen. I thought about God’s incredible creation. I was amazed by these beautiful giants (5-foot wingspan) relaxing in the midst of a city of 11.5 million people. Despite the maze of buildings, signs, wires and cars, the majesty of God’s creation shines through.
Things are tough in Brazil and there’s great hope that they will get better. I pray that they do. I get the feeling that for many, they already are. But no one talked to me about their problems here. They just talked about how happy they were to see me and my teaching partner, Tish, and how much they missed us. They asked where we wanted to eat and whether we were going to church with them on Sunday. It is wonderful to live in Joy! Read Job 12:7-10 and Psalm 19:1-4, and remember: God loves you UNCONDITIONALLY!
