As Caroline and I scrambled to pack for our long awaited London trip, we were dismayed by the forecast – cold and rain every day of our trip. Who wants to see Stonehenge in the rain or walk drenched and freezing in the London streets? These thoughts colored all of our plans. As we got in the car to head for the airport, I thought – why am I leaving this beautiful farm and this beautiful weather? Even Annie’s Minnesota weather looked better.
Taking off in the plane I thought about how narrow my thinking had been. Six years ago, I didn’t expect to be alive for this trip. Here I am blessed to have one last wonderful child at home– a fifteen-year-old content to leave behind her new driving permit and travel with her Dad to explore some of those wonderful places we used to dream about in front of her globe when she was little.
Jesus tells us not to worry. I suspect he might say, “Turn all of that over to me. Remember what happened with my disciples when they worried about the storm.” Stephen Covey reminds us that we need to “take our weather with us” – to be guided by what’s inside us, not what’s around us. Jesus could command the weather.
Caroline and I may just have to show up and see whether it’s raining. But rain or shine, we’ll take Jesus with us and give thanks that He is our sunshine regardless of the weather. Focused on Him, I feel loved and thankful, blessed to be on this great adventure. Read Matthew 6:25 – 33, and remember: God loves you unconditionally!
