My sister and I both played piano growing up. My sister was an excellent piano player, but she had one problem. She would get so caught up and upset by her mistakes that she would forget to move on and continue the song. One day after a recital, she was complaining about her mistake and was upset how her piece had sounded. Truthfully, she had played beautifully, but had paused too long after one mistake– a mistake few would have noticed or remembered if she’d only continued right on. My father recently reminded me that I encouraged… errrrr….told my sister, “Don’t stand on your mistake!”
The truth is, we all make mistakes. Some of us seem to be able to move past them, learn from them, make new mistakes, and continue on. Some of us choose to focus on the good and, while we notice the mistakes, we don’t let them immobilize or stop us. We continue to try, and God creates a beautiful song from our lives– from both the mistakes and the parts we get right. Others of us seem to be immobilized by our mistakes. We do something wrong and it’s like we get stuck in the moment and can’t get past it. If you are that person, my advice is still,”Don’t stand on your mistakes!” You are not defined by your mistakes. You will make mistakes. Choose to learn from them, move on, and make new ones. Focus on all the parts you get right and listen for the beautiful melody God is creating in your life.
Read Ephesians 2:1-10, and remember: you are forgiven, you are a child of God, and God loves YOU unconditionally!
