A Place at the Table

I love to set a table for guests.  Maybe it’s old-fashioned, but I really enjoy the look of a nice tablecloth set with the “company” dishes, glassware and silver.  A cloth napkin is a treat, along with a few flowers for a centerpiece.

When our grandchildren were very young, we started the tradition of “place cards” – mainly to be sure that each little one was seated next to a parent.  Our names on those place cards were some of the first words they learned to read.  After a few years they were the ones who set out the cards, spending much time rearranging until the plan was to their liking.

At first I was surprised that these little folded paper “name cards” were so important to the kids.  But maybe I understand it a little better now.  That little card declared that a special place had been made ready for them – a small affirmation of their importance at the table and in the family.

It’s just the kind of assurance that Jesus gives us in John 14.  Do not let your hearts be troubled . . . in my father’s house there are many dwelling places . . . I go to prepare a place for you.  Read John 14:1-6 as reassurance of Jesus welcoming us to His heavenly home.

It’s an awesome thought!  The Lord has a place prepared for YOU at His heavenly table.  He has a place marked with YOUR name.  And why?  Because God loves YOU; He loves YOU unconditionally.
