Some people seem to believe they aren’t good enough to serve God. They think they need to clean up their act before they take a leadership role in the church or do any type of ministry. How good is good enough? Because once you clean up your actions, you’ll likely notice some language you need to clean up, and once you clean up your language, you’re bound to notice some “unchristian” thoughts or feelings. That’s the nature of being transformed into God’s image. You won’t be perfect in this lifetime. None of us are. If you’re waiting to be good enough, you’ll likely never get there. We can get paralyzed by our fear of not being good enough. But, the good news is, God can and will use you just as you are. David, Solomon, Paul, and Peter were not perfect but God used them to do great things anyway. No, God doesn’t want us to stay stuck in our sinful ways, but God loves you just the way you are and will equip you to do whatever job God is calling you to. So don’t worry about whether or not you’re able, worry about whether or not you’re willing. God is looking for willing people to help bring about God’s kingdom here on earth. God wants us to help bring peace and love and justice and to reconcile all creation with God and each other. The end of Matthew relays Jesus’ commission to his disciples, or as I like to call it, the great “co-mission” with God. If you’re willing, God will go with you, giving you what you need each step of the way. And, I think you’ll find that as God is working through you, God is also transforming you into the person God created you to be. Read Matthew 28:16-20, and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally!
