How many times in history have two warring sides squared off against each other, each confident that “God is on our side!”? The Blues Brothers may have been on “a mission from God” but many of us who think we are in our choice of Presidential candidate, are perhaps, somewhat misguided. I have heard it reported that the tensions between US political parties is now so high that people care less about their prospective daughter or son in law’s national origin, religion or sexual preference than their political party.

So, who is God pulling for in this election? I am sure in pulpits and religious gatherings around the country, someone has officially or unofficially named God’s anointed for today’s vote. Well, I have this directly from God via the Bible. Ready? God is officially for YOU! That’s right, you – the person reading this blog post right now. That’s who God is for. And, God is for everyone reading this blog at all times and for everyone not reading this blog. And that includes (in alphabetical order by last name) Hillary Clinton, Gary Johnson, Evan McMullin, Jill Stein, and Donald Trump.

Why am I convinced of this? Let me turn to the words of theologian Karl Barth, who when asked if he could summarize the essence of his millions of words of theology replied, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

So, if you are an American who hasn’t voted yet, by all means, “render unto Caesar” and head out to vote today. But please, don’t do it thinking you are selecting the person God picked for the job, or the person God loves most, because to God we are each “The Beloved.”
