Listening from the shower on Sunday morning, a song came on. The lyrics & tune hooked me and I thought: this is a song we should be singing for Advent! Then the refrain came on and I recognized it: ‘Even so come, Lord Jesus Come”.
Annie had been looking for a “contemporary” Advent song for Wednesday Night worship. I called her in to listen to this one. “We sang it last Wednesday” she said. “How did it go?” I asked. “Well, it was new to them …”
“It was new to them” – “Ouch,” I thought. New means different and in our Contemporary Worship, like in our lives, we can get caught in a place, in a time, caught in the familiar, caught in the way things “used to be” or “have always been” – caught in what we are used to.
When thinking about changing jobs, a friend once told me, “If you don’t like what you’re doing, given all the time you spend at work, you might as well just dig a hole, get in and wait.”
Advent is a time of waiting. But it’s not “crawl in a hole” and wait. Waiting is an ACTIVE verb. Jesus calls us to be so much more. Check out these lyrics:
All of creation
All of the earth
Make straight a highway
A path for the Lord
Jesus is coming soonCall back the sinner
Wake up the saint
Let every nation shout of Your fame
Jesus is coming soonLike a bride waiting for her groom
We’ll be a Church ready for You
Every heart longing for our King
We sing
Even so come
Lord Jesus, comeEven so come
Lord Jesus, come
If you want to hear this tune in concert (or if you wonder if there are still thousands of young people who love the Lord – watch them worshiping at this concert) – try this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBHcvJhc6Pk
Even better, come to Wednesday Night Worship at JOY where, like a bride waiting for her groom, we are a church waiting for Jesus. Actively waiting. Loving God and our neighbor. Sharing the grace, peace, and love of Jesus with you!
Read Revelation 22: 16- 22, and remember that the Lord you are waiting for is waiting for you – because God loves you UNCONDITIONALLY!
Mike
