Leaning on a friend

When I was a child, I kept pestering my parents for a bike. All my friends had one, why not me? It turns out that they had been struggling with this issue, since I was 11 and my 10 year old brother wanted a bike, too, and they we’re afraid that I would not be able to ride one. They finally decided I deserved a chance to learn. My brother and I each received a brand new bike for our birthdays. I remember what a great day that was. I never gave any thought to not being able to ride. I did have a few challenges to overcome, but my friend from across the street was insistant on helping. She would follow me up and down the street, dragging a little red chair from our children’s set, so that when I fell, I could step up on that chair and continue. We were at this from morning till night for two weeks. At the end of those two weeks, I had learned to ride. I am still awed by the devotion of my friend,  Karen.

As we approach Christmas, we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus, the greatest friend any of us could ask for. He is there when we need him. He is always there! He not only provided me with the friend with the red chair, but he gave me the will to do the seemingly impossible task. He is always there to help us tackle the “impossible”.  Read the story of Jesus’s birth in Luke 2:1-20, and remember: God loves you unconditionally!
