The Thimble is Out!

The results are in – the thimble is out! If you played Monopoly as a child or with your children, then you probably remember the cast metal game pieces. My favorites were the top hat, the Scotty dog and, yes, the thimble. When the thimble was added to the game in 1935, a thimble was an integral part of day-to-day household life. Not so today.
Having made their decision, it’s a simple matter for Hasbro to eliminate the thimble and substitute a more contemporary game piece beginning with the games produced this year. But, at the same time, there are many lovers of Monopoly who are bemoaning the loss of this iconic piece.

I’m thinking there are some things in my life that would better be “cast out”. There are those little pockets of pride, envy, grudges and hurt feelings. When these come between me and another, I’m tempted to rationalize the feelings. Do I think that, after all, I’m right and they’re wrong? Mmmh – better cast these out with the thimble!

How about replacements? Our Lord has given us a better way. It’s a way filled with love, patience, kindness, meekness and mercy. Not so easy, I know. Sometimes we bemoan the casting out of the old ways. It may feel natural and comfortable to judge others. Forgiving is difficult! Over and over, we need to ask for forgiveness and set our hearts and minds on living a Christ-like life.

In Matthew, chapter 5, Jesus tells you about the life he wants for you. It is a life filled with patience, kindness, meekness, mercy and love. With His help, you too can do this. Jesus will be there to help you every step of the way. He’ll be there because He loves you – He loves you unconditionally.
