The most dramatic service of the Christian Church is the Easter Vigil. Held on Holy Saturday Night, it begins out doors with the lighting of a fire from which the large paschal candle is lit. The person carrying the candle leads the congregation to the door of the church and says, “The light of Christ.” Everyone responds, “Thanks be to God.”
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” You’d think everyone would have praised and thanked God for that revelation. They didn’t. Jesus received condemnation for his revelation. His opponents said he was crazy and had a demon. People tried to stone him. It still goes on today. You’d be surprised how angry people can become when you talk to them about Jesus.
Maybe the problem is that shining a light reveals a lot of things people would rather not see. But if you can’t see where you’re going, you’re likely to fall over things, or into things, or just plain get lost. We need light to see. We need the light of Christ.
Thank God for sending us the light of Christ to guide us. May we open our eyes to see what Christ wants us to see and may we follow his light wherever it leads us.
Read John 9:1-41, and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
