A Teller of Tales …

There’s a TV commercial that always concludes with the question, “What’s in your wallet?” Well, I’m not about to ask that, but how about “What’s in your head?”
Your brain is a marvelous story-teller! Did you know that? If we’re quiet, even for a few minutes, our brains quickly wander off onto their own stories. We hear voices whispering about days long past, urging us to revisit thoughts of regret or guilt. Or perhaps the voices look to the future anxiously, fretting about all the “what ifs” that worry us. You probably recognize the stories, you’ve heard them all before. This story-teller embedded in your brain is not very original, he tends to pull out the same tales over and over again – same regrets, same worries, same fears.

We’ve learned that we should live in the present moment and we try so very hard. We try to be gratefully aware of the here and now. Intellectually we know that this moment is the only one we have; the past is gone, the future not yet here. But that old “story-teller” always seems ready to sneak in his troublesome tales.

Next time one of these “stories” edges into your thinking, try immediately calling on God in prayer. Turn that upsetting concern over to Him. Then gently try to close the door on those thoughts and bring yourself back to the present. Will the old story return at another time? Absolutely. But God never tires of hearing from you, so you’re free to turn those worrisome thoughts over to Him each and every time.

Remember the words of the apostle Peter, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) God truly does care for you; He loves you unconditionally.
