CHIPPING OFF THE EDGES

The poster said, “Be patient. God isn’t finished with me yet.” That’s the truth. During Easter we celebrate our salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That’s a done deal. We received that gift in baptism, and it will come to full fruition after our resurrection to eternal life. In the mean time . . . Ah, there’s the problem. We live in the meantime, and in the meantime we’re far from perfect. God isn’t finished with us.

When I learned to use a machine lathe, I had to turn a rectangular-shaped piece of steel into a cylinder. To do that, you fix the metal in the chuck, set the tool so that it will barely touch the corner of the rectangle and start the lathe turning. If you did it right, you’d hear a rapid tick-tick-tick as the tool cut away the least amount of metal. Each time you made a pass, you advanced the tool a bit more. Gradually the edges were cut away, and the metal assumed a cylindrical shape. It you did it wrong and tried to cut off too much metal at once, there would a wham as the whole machine slammed to a halt.

I suspect God works with us this way, gradually taking off the edges as we get closer to the ideal. It takes time–a lifetime, in fact–but that’s what’s necessary. We’ll get there eventually. God has promised us that. But in the mean time, be patient. God isn’t finished with us yet.

Read Psalm 8 and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
