Where are you God? I need you, but you seem so far away today. Do you hear me? Maybe you’ve had days like that. Days when you long for God’s presence. We know intellectually that God is always with us, but sometimes we feel so alone.
At other times, we truly do feel God’s loving presence. Recently I visited the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. It was awe-inspiring to stand where Christians have gathered to worship and pray for more than 450 years. I thought of the griefs and sorrows that were brought to the Lord in that place, of the confessions that were heard and the songs of praise that were raised to the Almighty. In those moments and in that place, I felt part of the generations of God’s people. God felt very close indeed.
Where do you feel God’s closeness? Perhaps in worship or at the altar receiving Holy Communion. Perhaps in private prayer and meditation, or while listening to spiritual music. Sometimes you may feel His closeness as you minister to those in need, or as you gaze at the wonders of His creation. In these and so many ways, God gives us opportunities to know that He is near.
When God seems far away, use the channel that best helps you to feel His presence. Our God is a God of all the ages, a God for all time, all places and all people. He created you as His unique child. He really is always with you because He loves you unconditionally.
“Open the eyes of my heart Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see you, I want to see you.”
