On Being an Assertive Christian

I’d like to share with you a few verses of scripture and some thoughts from a book by Ruth Kock and Kenneth Haugk entitled “Speaking the Truth in Love” How to be an Assertive Christian. Two verses kind of set the tone for this.
John 14:16: “I am the way…. and the truth…. and the Life,” and Philippians 4:8 on thought and character: “Finally, bretheran, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious……..Think about these things.”

Assertive behavior is intregal and essential to the Christian Lifestyle. What does being assertive mean? It means you express yourself effectively and stand up for your point of view, while also respecting the rights and beliefs of others.

Being assertive is a core communication skill.  It produces good leaders.

“Assertive individuals contribute to the well being of the whole community.” In Ephesians 4: 15-16, St. Paul speaks of the result of honest caring interactions:

“Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament grows and builds itself up in love, as every part does its work.”

Assertive Christian leaders are proactive rather than reactive. Jesus Lived Assertively.

Assertive behavior enriches, stabilizes, and protects relationships with others, with yourself, and with GOD. That’s what assertiveness is for.

A Prayer:  “Dear GOD…. Help us to have nothing to do with the godless myths of anxieties, old angers, or fears about the future. We know that you earnestly desire to be part of our thinking and problem solving as we serve as leaders of your church. We pray Father that you help all of us to become assertive Christian Leaders and speak the truth in love.” In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Go live your faith assertively, and remember: God loves you unconditionally.
