This morning we wake to Memorial Day, the federal holiday on which we as Americans remember all those who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces. Our observance goes back to 1868 when the nation decorated the graves of Union war dead from the American Civil War. We continue to honor those men and women who made the supreme sacrifice, who gave their lives to protect our freedom.
It’s a time of solemn observances, a time for proudly displaying our American flags, and a time for patriotic songs. One that comes to mind is this verse from the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
“In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.”
These words by Julia Ward Howe were penned in 1861. They are no less true today. The men and women of our armed services continue to die for our freedom. And lest we forget, Christ Himself made the supreme sacrifice as He died to make men holy. Through His death we are made righteous. Through His death we are freed from the power of sin. Through His death our God looks down on us and smiles.
Today you may lovingly remember family members who died for your freedom. You may mourn their death and the painful loss to your family. Some of you may spend time at the graveside of your loved one. Your loss is real, your sorrow heartrending. But through it all remember the sacrifice of your Lord Jesus Christ. Because of His death you are forgiven and made whole. He died because He loves you. God loves you unconditionally.
