On my last trip north, my youngest grandson was anxious to show me his latest Lego project, the Millennium Falcon. (Ok, I didn’t know what that was either, but it’s Hans Solo’s starship from Star Wars.) With 1300 pieces, I did not believe a 10 year old could build it on his own, so in my grandmotherly naiveté I assumed Dad had helped. Tim was a bit insulted by my doubt and assured me that he had done it all on his own. Showing me a very thick instruction manual, he said, “It’s really easy Grammy, you just do it one step at a time.”
Those words still stick in my mind – “It’s really easy – just do it one step at a time.” Not a bad motto on my life’s journey. Each of us is a work in progress. Day by day, year by year, sometimes a step forward, sometimes a step back – that’s how life unfolds. I don’t know about you, but I get into the most trouble when I try to step out of the present moment and worry about what’s ahead. Fretting and anxiety are most often based on what I will do, what will happen, how I will manage. (Perhaps I’m trying to accomplish Step #56 when I’m still on Step #4)
How much better to focus on God’s Word and live life “one step at a time”. Those are the very instructions Jesus has given to us. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34) Such practical advice! Just live this day; solve today’s problems; enjoy the life we have right here and now. When we put God first, we can focus on doing our best to serve Him today and let God deal with tomorrow. In verse 27 of the same chapter, Jesus again points out that worry truly does not help. “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life.”
Your life has many steps. Some are more difficult than others, but God is there for you each step of the way. You can’t control the future, but you can live this moment to the fullest. Remember, “Just one step at a time.” God will not fail you; He loves you unconditionally.
