Making Wishes…

One of my earliest memories with my mother is standing at the front window in the early evening, watching for the first star to appear. The legend claimed that if you wished upon that very first star, your wish would come true. So, together we’d say:
Star bright, star light,

First star I see tonight,

I wish I may, I wish I might,

Have the wish I wish tonight.

Then I’d close my eyes real tight and make my silent wish. It was always the same – a baby brother and a big sister. (Neither arrived.)

OK, my wishes may have been unrealistic, but I was just a little kid! Even then I wasn’t so sure those wishes would come true for real, but who knew? And, it was a sweet little moment with my Mom.

I’m wondering how often throughout my life I have sent wishes and prayers to my heavenly Father that were equally unrealistic. Dear God, please do this or please do that. And those requests were not always granted either. God knew what was best; I did not.

The big difference of course is that unlike that twinkling star, our heavenly Father was and is listening. I picture God smiling down on me like a patient daddy with a toddler. The little one begs for candy; Daddy says no, not right now. But even when that father says no, he loves his little one with all his heart.

Prayer opens the door between God and us. I imagine God standing on the threshold just waiting for us to knock. He is ready and waiting to open that door, to welcome us. He asks us to approach Him as Abba, or Daddy. No fancy words, no show of piety, just a simple conversation with Daddy. What a profound gift to know our almighty God is ready to listen, ready to answer!

Lord, I know you hear my prayers. Sometimes you say yes. Sometimes you say no. Sometimes you say wait – the time is not right. And yes Lord, sometimes I’m just as impatient as that toddler. Through it all, I know You love me. How wonderful is that!!!

God is ready and waiting to hear your prayer. When you speak, He listens. Open your heart to Him, open your heart to your heavenly Daddy. No request is too big or too small. Remember God loves you; He loves you unconditionally.
