For me, Labor Day still brings to mind thoughts of “Back to School.” Now I know here in Florida, the kids have long since started classes. But back in the day, it was Labor Day that marked the end of summer and the beginning of the school year.
I always thought there was something very special about that “first day.” Each year the teacher returned from vacation to a “clean slate”. The floors were cleaner than they would be all year, the desks were neatly arranged, and the bulletin boards were freshly done. Anticipation was high in a class of new students. For the teacher, each September was a fresh start.
This return to a “clean slate” was unheard of in the business world. A return from vacation meant that my “in box” was overflowing. Nothing new and fresh here, just back to the same old grind. Only now the pile of paper was higher than ever.
The idea of starting fresh with a “clean slate” led me to think about our relationship with Jesus, the Master Teacher. As miraculous as it seems, with Jesus every day is a brand new beginning. Our slate is wiped clean. Every failure, evil thought, missed opportunity, needless worry – they’re all wiped away by our forgiving Savior. Each day He invites us to come to him anew, forgiven and washed clean. It seems that every day is the “first day of school.”
Would you like to make a clean start? Would you like to put today’s fears and failures behind you? Would you like this moment to be a shining new beginning? Jesus is ready to forgive all that troubles you. He’s ready to welcome you to a new day. And wonder of wonders, He’s ready to do the same thing all over again tomorrow! That’s real unconditional love. Yes, it’s true – He loves you unconditionally.
