The first time we visited Joy Lutheran Church, I looked around at all the old people in the pews and thought that I could never belong here. How could I worship without the accompaniment of a baby’s cry? Wouldn’t I miss playing hide and seek with a curly-haired toddler over his mother’s shoulders while I was listening to the sermon. Where were the sweet, confident voices of the children’s choir singing and shouting . . .
“Jesus loves me this I know . . .”
But God had a plan. He filled this church with older adults who are exuberant and sincere in their sharing of the peace. They dress carefully in their “Sunday best” out of respect for our Lord Jesus Christ. With strong voices, they proudly and boldly proclaim their beliefs together in reciting The Apostles Creed, without need of a bulletin. They taught me that in losing a fellow member, we joyfully celebrate life on earth and confidently look forward to life everlasting. They look forward to Sunday services as a time to worship and praise, to give thanks, to learn and to demonstrate that
“Jesus loves me this I know . . .”
I’m glad I’m old enough to belong to Joy.
God loves us here, and He loves you unconditionally.
