Clue by Candlelight . . .

The house was full of extended family; meals were haphazard adventures created with whatever was available; and the TV offered non-stop coverage of ferocious winds and pounding rains. Yes, it was a week ago; storm Irma arrived with force and fury, triggering raised levels of stress and rising tensions. The power of nature was formidable. Other than some simple preparations, we had no control over these mighty forces. It was only natural to be fearful and to offer desperate prayers for our safety.

Circumstance brought our family together for these few days. As the power went out, circumstances also provided an unforeseen opportunity for closeness and sharing. Safe within these walls, we gathered around the table to play “Clue” by candlelight. Our games kept us challenged and intrigued. Our togetherness reminded us of what really matters – the love we share as a family.

The hurricane we experienced was extraordinary. I would never make light of the tragedy and devastation suffered by many in Irma’s path. But, at the same time, I am grateful for God’s hand in walking with us. He allowed us to grow closer, to enjoy each other’s company, to realize once again how much we love each other. We are richer for it.

I am reminded of the words from Isaiah: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned or scorched, nor will the flame kindle upon you.”  Isaiah 43:2

No matter what we go through in life, God is there with us, walking by our side. Sometimes He even uses dire circumstances to remind us of our greatest blessings: His love for us, and the love that He allows us to share with one another.
Remember, He loves you always and unconditionally.

“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
