Fire Alarms and Other Warnings

While we were staying in Alexandria VA, we had a fire alarm in the middle of the night. Talk about frightening and disruptive! What to do?

Staying in a large hotel on the third floor. Sound asleep. Husband with a disability which makes using the stairs impossible. Doubly hampered by vertigo issues. Alarms loud and hurtful to the ears. Lights flashing and scary. All signs that something was going on in the hotel; we needed to do something. But what?

I have some experience with fire drills and evacuating large numbers of people from my work with senior housing apartments. I also have a good nose, sometimes a curse, however I could not smell smoke nor was the door hot to touch. While I was standing at the door, wondering what steps to take, I noticed that there were instructions on the door concerning fire alarms and procedures. I quickly read them.

Sure enough, there were instructions for what to do, if you could not leave your room. Stuff towels under the door. Go to the window and wait for assistance. There were sprinklers in every room and hallway. The rooms are the safest place to stay.
As it turned out, there was construction going on in the hotel and dust caused the false alarm. However, at the time, we didn’t know that and it was a helpless feeling that kept us wondering what to do.

Life can be like a fire alarm in the middle of the night causing confusion and fear. Is there an instruction manual to help us along the way? You bet. Lots of good advice and counsel can be found on almost any page of the Bible.

This enduring and wise source of information and guidance is literally a life-saver for us. It would not tell me how to get out of the hotel during a fire alarm, but it does tell me that God delights in His creations. He sent His Son to change the old law and redeem us from the terror of death. It comforts with assurance that God is always there, no matter where we are. We need only read the directions.  It tells me that God loves me and YOU unconditionally!

teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalm 25:4-5
