All my life I was taught by those who raised me to work hard. I tackled my job in that way, at times to the point of exhaustion. I always tried to be the very best I could be. Classic Type A personality? I think a psychologist would agree. Now I had a coworker, who showed up late every day, did a minimal amount of work, and rarely planned ahead to prevent problems. Yet he was happy and very involved with family, sports, and hanging out with friends. He never worried about anything. Classic Type B personality, a psychologist might say.
So which is better than the other? In my opinion I would say – Type A. Ah, but if you asked him, he would say no, not so. I remember him telling me, “You run around all uptight, always dreaming of worst case scenarios and how to deal with them. You need to take time to smell the roses.” To which I might reply, “There wouldn’t be any roses to smell if you were in charge of planting them and their watering.”
I am now convinced, that God would rather have followers who were Type AB, or a blend, putting full effort forward when necessary and then relaxing to enjoy and appreciate all He has provided.
Remember Mary and Martha? When Jesus came to visit, Martha worked frantically with her cleaning and preparing. Mary “chilled out” and just relished the presence of her dearest friend. When Martha complained, Jesus told her (in modern language) to “chill out” and take the time to “smell the roses.”
We sometimes get very wrapped up in the tasks at hand – at home, at work, and even at church. We plunge forward. We fail to chill and just enjoy the company of our loving Savior. We miss the chance of allowing Him to give us serenity and happiness. Amen?
Remember, God loves YOU unconditionally.
