Christ, Our King . . .

Did you ever play “King of the Mountain?” In the old childhood game, children attempted to occupy the highest point on a boulder or jungle gym, while fighting off attempts by other children to knock them off and replace them. Players stepped on and over each other, struggling to reach the top.

I can’t imagine Jesus playing “King of the Mountain”. I think He would forego the race to the top. I picture Him remaining at the bottom with the weakest, the littlest or the poorest. I picture him hugging the little girl in a wheelchair; warming the hands of the boy without mittens; embracing the child who had been bullied.
Yet, Jesus is not only “King of the Mountain”, He is Christ the King of the Universe! That’s what we celebrated yesterday on Christ the King Sunday!

Soon we’ll be moving on to celebrate Jesus’ humanity – His birth as a human baby boy in Bethlehem. But for now it is good to remember his Almighty Kingship. I remember the words we learned in Confirmation class to describe our Lord: omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. (Actually at the time I thought those three big words were pretty cool!) Our Lord is all-knowing, all powerful, and all-present (everywhere and all the time).

Jesus, our King, has all the power, the glory and the honor. Yet He came not to rule, but to serve. He is king of all kings, but He walked humbly. Where He saw hatred, violence and suffering, He brought love, compassion and joy.   Remember He loves YOU unconditionally.

The lyrics of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” aptly express our awe.

Judy

For the lord God omnipotent reigneth
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!
The kingdom of this world;
is become the kingdom of our Lord,
And of His Christ
And He shall reign for ever and ever
King of kings, and lord of lords
forever and ever!
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

“ . . . God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and LORD of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen” 1 Timothy 6:15-16
