Does Skin Color Matter?

When we watch young children playing, we soon realize that they are totally accepting of all friendships regardless of skin color.  As a Christian we should want all mature adults to view others the same way.  As Martin Luther King stated in his famous speech in Washington in front of the Lincoln Memorial, no man should be judged because of the color of his skin, but rather by the content of his character.

In Jesus time, people were very tribal.  They had prejudices too, maybe not so much by skin color as by religion, or against their conquerors. They rejected racial mixing such as with Samaritans.  Jesus addressed this with the woman at the well, with stories about the lepers, the Pharisees, Roman taxation and more.  He taught us that the greatest way to overcome our tendencies to judge others was to love them no matter what.

As a white man, I grew up looking at portraits of a white Jesus. I never realized until I was older, that He had a totally different skin color and ethnicity than me. I then realized that as a follower of the most perfect man that ever walked this Earth, skin color doesn’t nor should it ever matter. Rather, only content of character should matter. Even then, all judgement should be left to God, who is all loving and judges rightly.

Remember God Loves All of Us Unconditionally!

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
