I was thinking about this Tom Cochrane song the other day while driving along a busy Florida highway on my way to visit a friend who is in the hospital. I wasn’t in a big rush, but everybody else on that road was. Cars were whizzing in and out of the lanes, narrowly avoiding catastrophe and I was observing.
I often pray when I am on this road. It is sometimes quite taxing and today was one of those days. While I prayed for patience and safety, I began to get a metaphoric message about this road as a microcosm of humanity. There are countless numbers of different cars, in all shapes, sizes and colors on this road at any time of the day or night. Some are in good condition; others are on their last legs. There are young ones, old ones and in-between ones.
The cars are driven by equally diverse humans (at least for the moment) from different parts of the world with different shapes, sizes and colors. They all have different reasons for being on that highway at the time. Some may have had a shared purpose, but each being was unique unto itself.
Some were obeying the rules of the road; some were not. Some were slow; some were not. Some were angry and reckless; some were calm and cautious.
It is hard to think that there is a common denominator amidst all this diversity, but there is. The Triune God who started all this action in motion loves each of those multifaceted individuals, just as He loves you and me – unconditionally.

I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.” Psalm 52:8
