A Full Time Effort . . .

I was a water and sewer maintenance foreman. It was my full-time job. To supplement my family’s income, I also had two part-time jobs. I soon realized that I was no longer giving 100% to my “bread and butter job,” the full time one. Indeed there is only so much any one of us can accomplish in any given day. We’re human. We need time to sleep, to relax, and to recoup our energy.

Thinking of this in Spiritual terms, we as Christians sometimes take on more than God’s Spirit directs us to. When asked to assume a task, we may succumb to the lure of being complimented. We may want to be liked, or even to be put on a pedestal.

Through the years I have learned to pray for God’s guidance when I am asked to do a job. His Spirit helps me determine which tasks I am best equipped to do. I learned that it’s OK to say no, when I would be unable to give my full attention to the assignment.

As far as Christian works are concerned, I feel God would rather we accomplish one responsibility well, rather than several done poorly. Always ask for the Spirit’s guidance before proceeding. Once secure in His answer of “yes”, then proceed with your best effort!
