My Fitbit and I

I wear a Fitbit. Perhaps you do too. If you’re not familiar with this little device, it looks like a wristwatch, albeit rather clunky. And yes, it does give me the date and time. But more importantly it “counts my footsteps” each day. When I reach my goal it congratulates me; when I’ve been too sedentary it “suggests” I get moving.

If I were sufficiently motivated, I’m sure I could take a healthy daily walk without this extra “conscience” strapped to my wrist. The thing is, I don’t. But being competitive by nature, I refuse to be outwitted by a Fitbit. So, I’ll do whatever it takes to get in those extra steps by the end of each day, even if it means one last trip around the block.

It made me think about my daily walk with Jesus, sharing His love freely with those around me. This is a “walk” that is much more important than my steps around the block. What’s my incentive here, my motivation, my conscience, my spiritual “Fitbit” so to speak?

Like a physical walk, I’m prone to neglecting this when left to my own devices. I need to be reminded, prodded, or inspired daily. A time for devotion can help; a word from my Lord that just pops off the page that day urges me on. Frequent contact with other Christians can help; we share our struggles and inspire each other to live a life of love. Prayer can help; those quiet moments when I let the Holy Spirit flow freely into my mind and heart.

It’s funny how it works. The more love I give – the more I want to give. It’s not my doing, but the work of the Holy Spirit working through me, in spite of my weakness and reluctance.

Our almighty, heavenly Father really wants us to share His love. He knows we’ll need help, and He wants to support and motivate us. What an awesome thought, that the majestic God of the universe sees each of us, cares for each of us, and wants to help each of us. And why – because He loves me and YOU unconditionally.

Judy

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow — not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below — indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39
