Yesterday was Mother’s Day. I fondly remembered my own mother; I thought of my own “motherhood”. And then my thoughts led me to the most honored of all mothers – Mary, the chosen one, the mother of our Lord Jesus.
Mary was fearful and troubled. She learned she would have a baby.
Mary was young and poor. She probably felt inadequate. She seemed to be a most unlikely candidate.
Mary remembered. She thought deeply. She watched by her sleeping infant as shepherds and magi bowed before him. She would cherish all these things in her heart.
Mary was terribly worried. Her twelve year old son lingered behind in Jerusalem. She searched frantically; she worried; she was a mother.
Mary suffered unimaginably. She had to watch as her precious son died a terrible death on a cross.
Mary’s calling was a special honor. She was a willing servant. She trusted God and obeyed His call. She knew the joy of motherhood; she suffered the pains of motherhood.
Motherhood is still a great privilege; but along with the joys, it still brings sacrifice and suffering.
Cherish the child.
Cherish the memories.
Cherish God’s gift of mothers, a gift of love.
Our heavenly Father loved Mary; He loves you, unconditionally.
