Tongues of Fire!

“They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:3-4

Yesterday we celebrated Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Disciples. It’s a story of wonder and miracles. Even the image of “tongues of fire” appearing on their heads is magical. This just doesn’t happen! Along with those original twelve, we are awestruck. It’s a little scary!

Then the mysterious is followed by what is also supernatural, but oh so very practical. The disciples begin to speak – each in a different language. No, they haven’t studied linguistics. The Holy Spirit simply used their mouths to bring a message to people from many lands.

Miraculous we say. A one-time event. Couldn’t happen today!

Or could it?

Did you ever approach a suffering soul, just not knowing what you could say? And then you began to speak. You heard words coming from your mouth. You wondered, where did that come from??? But the words seemed perfect. Amazing!

The Holy Spirit still speaks through us. He still gives us words to share – words that will be understood by the one who listens. Good reason to pray before we speak; his wisdom far surpasses ours.

Now we may not see “tongues of fire” dancing on our heads. And that’s probably a very good thing.

But the Holy Spirit is still very much with us. His powers have not diminished.

So we pray, we ask, Lord give us the words to say. Open our mouths to share your love, to bring comfort and reassurance. We ask it especially when we in our humanness just don’t know where to begin.

The Almighty will not let you down. He loves you unconditionally.
