Pillars of the Community

Living in an affluent society, we often look up to certain people as a notch above everyone else, the pillars of our villages or cities. We may look to them for solutions to perplexing problems. There are so many issues: moral, financial, infrastructure, poverty, distribution of health care, crime, drug use. Often these individuals perform well in directing programs and ideas to help. But sometimes we are shocked to hear that one or more of these leaders is guilty of immoral or unethical activity. It tends to make of lose faith in all our leaders.

Really we as Christians should not be shocked, since by Gods own word we are all sinners who have all fallen short of His glory. To God all sin is abhorrent.

Jesus Himself understood full well that the pillars of His day were imperfect and often pointed it out to His detriment. By His example of washing the feet of His followers, Jesus showed that to be a good leader, you must become humble and a servant of all.

What can we do? We can pray for our leaders. We can ask God to guide us when we are discerning whom we should trust with leadership roles. We can leave the judgement of others up to Him who sees all.

We should also do whatever we can to help our leaders achieve success in creating a peaceful society. We can always rely on our Lords guidance in doing so. Instead of just being judgmental and critical of actions we think won’t work, we could use our influence as Christians to nudge our leaders in ways we feel God would approve – ways that would bring about a better society.

Remember God loves YOU unconditionally.
