I have always been fascinated by the growth process of plants – any kind of plant: house plants, vegetables, flowers, even weeds! Take a minute to think about this miraculous gift that the Creator has given us.
You take a small dried seed that looks like it is all shriveled and dead. Place the seed into the soil and cover it up. Give it some water and warmth. Within days or weeks, you will begin to see the little green sprout begin to peek out into the sunshine. Amazing! Then, each day the plant grows and changes and eventually will produce fruit or flower.
Botanists have studied the structure and physiology of plants to the point of understanding the details, but they cannot, nor can we, recreate the instigating force that gets the seed to come back to life.
It’s the Constant Gardener at work. He gives flora the life force needed to grow and thrive. God has given us these wonderful plants to care for and use for enjoyment and nourishment. Just as we care for the plants, He is always tending and caring for us.
This does not mean that there will not be trials and tribulations in the plant’s life, nor in ours. There will be drought, too much rain, a careless human gardener. However, the Constant Gardener has assured us that the seeds will continue to grow and produce.
This Spring, when I returned to Vermont, I found my little garden in bloom with some flourishing plants. My brother, John, who opens the cottage was surprised to see the garden growing without any visible signs of care. I pointed out to him that I doubted the basil had wintered over, unlike hardy perennials such as the Iris and Bee Balm.

Who was the mystery gardener? It must be Jeanne! My good friend had surprised me with parsley, sage, rosemary and basil! She is a partner with the Constant Gardener in tending and caring for plants and me. I am so grateful for her presence and God’s presence in my life.
The Constant Gardener is always there for each of us. We need only ask. Grace is always there for the taking. God is always there for the caring, tending, watering and harvesting in our lives. Always remember that God loves you unconditionally and eternally.
