I never want to lose the wonder that I feel when I look at the world around me.
When I stare across this wide beautiful lake at sunset, I see the “purple mountains majesties.” Shaded in glorious hues from the setting sun, I can see why Katharine Lee Bates was moved to label the Rocky Mountains as such. Although I am looking at the Adirondack Mountains which are more modest than the Rockies, the majesty of this creation is so apparent to me that is makes my heart swell with gratitude and joy. What a wonder!
When I look to the right, I see King Kong lying on his back in the lake. This is an image noted by my earthly father one day as he stared at the large point jutting out into the lake. Yes, it does look a little like King Kong with his chin pointing to the sky and his hands comfortably resting on his large stomach. Over the years, the trees have lost their definition and the King looks a little fuzzy now. However, the image remains and always reminds me of the pleasant times that I spent here with my father. What a wonder!
When I look at the lakeshore, I see millions, literally millions, of small flat stones that are perfect for skimming or skipping on the days when the lake is calm. They are so beautiful. The variety of shapes keep my imagination jumping: “What can I make with this one?” “Oh, this one looks like the state of Vermont!” “Just beautiful!”
I am sure that these millions of stones have been here for millions of years. Vermont’s indigenous people, the Abenaki, must have used them for arrows, spears and knives. I have found some with the edges chipped away. What a wonder!
The world is full of wonders – large and small. They are part and parcel of the gifts we have been given by our Heavenly Father to enjoy and cherish. They are meant to renew our spirits and we are meant to guard them carefully. We cannot take them for granted or let them lose their wonder.
Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for this precious world with all its wonders. Help me to continue to seek out the wonders in everything and everyone I meet. Help me to remain in constant contact with you as I walk this path. Hold my hand and help me to step carefully as I walk the rocky shore of life.
Read Psalm 8 and remember that God loves you unconditionally!
Terri
