Go Somewhere

First Posted on April 27, 2017

Imagine sitting in a comfy armchair reading a book about flying an airplane. When you’ve finished reading the book, you are in exactly the same place. You haven’t flown anywhere. The same thing can happen reading the Bible. A person could read the Bible every day without it making any difference. A person has to be engaged in the Bible. They have to do something with the reading, go some place with it.

The way I engage with the Bible is by asking questions. One of the basic questions is “why is this passage in the Bible?” What was so important about something that it was preserved for two or three thousand years or more? What might the first readers have thought about this passage?

However, the big question for me is always, “So what?” I’ve read this piece of the Bible. What am I to do as a result of reading this. What does it call on me to do? In effect, you have to preach yourself a sermon every time you read the Bible. Grapple with the Scriptures the way every preacher does until you get the message for yourself. And when you’ve done that, get out of your comfy armchair and do what you’ve just told yourself to do. You may be surprised where you go.

Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17 and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
