Don’t Go To Bed Angry

This title suggestion is Biblical, not just something your mother shared with you before you got married. Ephesians 4:26 “Don’t let the sun go down on your anger.”  Paul wrote to the folks in Ephesus with the purpose of trying to create unity among diverse peoples and instruct them in the proper conduct in a church setting, their home and in the world.

Have you fallen short of this teaching? Are you a spouse who has had words, a spat, or an argument resulting in anger? Do you diligently plan how to make it right? How can you undo what was said? Does forgiveness seem like a foreign word? Tick, tick, tick, the sun is beginning to set. Are you a parent upset with your child’s blatant disregard for house rules? Have the neighbors for the 4th time this month, left their garbage can out or ignored their own barking dog to the dismay of the houses near them?

Arguments, angry words, disenchantment, unresolved upset all need to be squashed and calm before the sun goes down. Really? Whew! That is a big task. I’m guessing the people of Ephesus were falling short, as do we. Because we are not perfect, not all the Biblical guidelines for living are a “piece of cake” to follow. The attached blessing to this is God loves us unconditionally and He knows we will fall short. He offered guidelines throughout the Book of Ephesians, His hope for us to get along and strive for peace and resolution. God forgives us; do we forgive others and ourselves? Don’t let the sun set while you are still harboring ill feelings against another. Put extra effort into resolution and forgiveness and dissolve anger. Love one another as He loves you.
