The Holy Moments

We so often find the extraordinary in the ordinary. A phone call that might even be initially perceived as an annoying interruption. I guess I am one of those strange birds that always answers my phone. Of course, I am learning to be more cautious. Unknown callers that have a seemingly harmless number (could it be one of my parishioners?) are most likely someone “spoofing” or “phishing” or whatever it is called – scamming you. If there is silence, I count “one one thousand, two one thousand”, say “hello” again, then hang up.

But occasionally, just when I’m not expecting it, the ordinary turns extraordinary. Someone goes out of their way to give me holy, beautiful words. Words of praise and affirmation. Whatever split-second annoyance I may have felt for the interruption is warmed up by the “God-wink.” I hope you recognize when these moments happen to you, for you. I wish for younger people to be able to “hit the pause button” on their video game, their Smart phone, their Instagram chat to notice how extraordinary these holy moments can be.

In a world where it is increasingly hard to trust, the only One who can make us trust again stands waiting to embrace our suspicions. I honestly don’t know what it will take to impress upon future generations the truly priceless gift that is God’s grace. It doesn’t have to be “cool” or “hip”, or whatever the vernacular of the day is. It just is – beautiful, extraordinary, transcendent. I pray that as we careen into “the holidays” we will find those holy moments, and lovingly share them with our younger ones. They need to know that there is a timeless peace, a forgiving grace, and a better way than the world experienced through social media and electronic devices. (I guess I’m showing my age – sigh).

Giving thanks to a God who loves unconditionally, endures all things, hopes all things.
