I scoff at New Year’s resolutions. Why bother when I can begin anew with each second, each minute, each hour or each new day? Why wait a whole year to attempt a change of action?
Many New Year’s resolutions involve changing behaviors that harm either me or others. Recognizing the harmful nature of my actions, asking for forgiveness and attempting to change those actions is possible at any time.
Repentance, the turning around or away from actions that put us at odds with God, is possible with the grace of God. It is possible because Christ bridges the gap for us and assists us to cross the divide created by sin.
I am not always successful at these changes. I wish that I could just make one resolution to change and have it become effective. However, the practice of faith in my daily life demonstrates that small changes are possible. I have accepted the fact that I won’t always “get it right,” and the process of trying is more important than surrendering to the objectionable behavior.
It is another of the wonderful gifts given to us by God who loves us unconditionally.
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
