“Then God spoke all these words . . .”

A couple of years ago, we watched the blockbuster movie “The Ten Commandments” as part of a very rare confirmation class retreat at Joy. It was fun to relive the excitement that I had felt as a youngster watching this production for the first time.

The courage of Moses was inspirational; the miracles were faith-affirming and the trip through the Red Sea was still as exciting as the first time I saw it.

However, the climax of the movie was when Moses climbed Mount Sinai and received the stone tablets confirming a lasting covenant with God. I could spend lots of time going over each of these commandments, but we all know what they mean, don’t we? They set out the rules that God has given us to stay in a right relationship with Him.

God knows that we will struggle with each and every one of these commandments-even the first one about only worshipping one god. He wants us to review these rules regularly to account for how our relationship with Him is progressing.

Isn’t Lent the perfect time to practice this review? Sometimes the resulting knowledge of my personal failings and sins is quite discouraging. I feel that for every step forward, I take two back. Even with something as simple as controlling my temper in the car. I really do have difficulty on SR 200. (Actually, driving is a great time to pray!)

However, I know that God will love me no matter what is revealed during this review because God loves me unconditionally. The actions of trying to obey and examining this relationship put me in a right place with God.

God’s unconditional love is for all His children. It is why He sent His Son to earth. It is why He keeps His covenant with us. It is why His forgiveness has no end.
