Do Not Be Afraid

“Impuriel rose half a meter off the ground, flew toward the monk, gently beating his wings, and said in a voice as soft as silk, ‘Fear not, and be in no wise afraid.’” This scene appears in Jostein Gaarder’s charming book, The Christmas Mystery. Angels have to warn people not to be afraid.

The story of Jesus is framed by angels telling people not to be afraid. Remember the shepherds tending their flocks when Christ was born? “Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see–I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:9-11). Then at the tomb the women encountered an angel in dazzling white. “But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said’” (Matthew 28:5-6).

The Biblical writers were aware that fear is a natural human response in the presence of the Holy. We should feel awe, reverence and fear in the presence of God. We are after all, sinful creatures come before the Holy God. But then we should hear the comforting words, “Do not be afraid.” God gave the only son for our sake and raised him from the dead. We share that risen life with Christ. There is nothing to fear.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

Read Matthew 28:1-8 and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
