“For the Lord your God goes with you.” (Deuteronomy 20:4, Mark 16:7)
“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)
I could have added “Advocate” and “Counselor” as other names for the Holy Spirit, based on what God the Father and Jesus the Son have to say about the promise to provide companionship and guidance to all who seek the Lord.
I like to think that dogs are one of God’s most special creatures. I realize we are not all dog lovers but do consider this: they are loyal companions and oftentimes even physical guides. I have not seen the movie “A Dog’s Purpose”, but it seems to me to be a very succinct title. Dogs do fulfill a special purpose for us “hoomans.” As such, they might give us an indication of the special love and care that God showers upon us. Whenever we are afraid or uncertain, we can know that He goes before us (Deut. 31:8). We are strengthened to boldly express our faith. When we look for His guidance instead of our own flawed thinking or questionable advice, we can rest assured that our lives are directed by Him, even as He “lets go of the leash” so that we might be free.
In the seasons of the church year, we find ourselves at a little bit of an “interlude”. The Easter season is concluding, with our Lord preparing his disciples for the joyous burden of their work ahead. They worship their teacher and friend who has gone to the Father, and they wait for the promise of the unseen power through the Holy Spirit/Companion/ Guide. There is a lot of letting go, farewells. Graduations, “snowbirds” returning to primary residences. We will have our own travels for recreation. May all of us be re-created in the knowledge that our paths are pre-cut by The One who goes before us. Our own spirits are lifted in the relationships we cultivate. Yesterday I had the unexpected pleasure of spending time with my favorite aunt and favorite two cousins. That was combined with a planned overnight visit and Florida Orchestra concert with my Dad and stepmom. Each in their own loving way has been a God-blessed guide to me, encouraging and supporting me throughout my life. They go with me in mutual prayer and love. They are gifts of The One who loves unconditionally. Even if your own primary human companion and/or guide is now just a sweet memory, you undoubtedly feel the warmth of their spirit, the echoes of their voice, and the mutual love from the same unconditionally loving God.
