I am writing this at the Florida Theatre Conference Festival where I’m acting in one of my own skits in the Dramature section. That’s a polite way of saying performances by old fogies. Probably 99.5% of the participants at the festival are high school students going to workshops, performing in plays, and strutting their stuff at auditions hoping for admission to a College so they can pursue a career on stage.
Few of them will make a living as an actor or singer. There’s just too much competition for too few opportunities. I know that from experience. Some parents wonder why people like me don’t tell the kids about the difficulty. Well, they’ll learn the harsh realities of the performing world soon enough. For now, let them dream.
We need to dream. I am sadden by the way the church today seems to be without vision. Maybe we have just gotten too old to dream, but that shouldn’t be. The Scriptures promise: “I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions” (Joel 2:28). Christians believe that promise was fulfilled at Pentecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2). Young and Old together share a vision of what can be in Christ.
Please, dear friends, keep dreaming what is possible. Talk to young people, to your grand-children and great-grandchildren. Share your dreams and their dreams. Have a vision of hope for the future. In Christ all things are possible.
Read Acts 2:18 and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
