Time?

Time and the weather. Two dependable topics of conversation. We talked about the weather a couple of weeks ago. So, let’s look at time.

Are you confused by the passage of time? Do you remember when the days of winter dragged on for what seemed like an eternity, while the warm sunny days of summer flew by on the swiftest of feet? Do you often asked, “Where did the time go?” Do your days fly or drag?

I am convinced that time as a physical entity is no longer the same as it was when I was younger. I mean that I don’t think that the value of a minute in 2019 is the same as the value of that minute in 1959. Of course, I can’t prove my thesis; it just gives me some comfort when thinking about how fast time seems to move for me these days. It seems like there is never enough time to do everything that I want to do.

So, how does God experience time? This simple question is not simple. It is a deep theological challenge. In looking for an answer, I stumbled across an article on the GotQuestions.org website. The question posed was “What is God’s relationship to time?”
We read numerous references to God and time in the Bible. Many verses refer to God’s timelessness; His eternal existence. Moses, in Psalm 90:4, gives us the explanation that for God, a thousand years are like a day. We have attempted throughout history to put God into our patterns of behavior in relationship to time, but we really cannot get Him to fit correctly.

Here’s an interesting quote from this reference: “…the science of physics tells us that time is a property resulting from the existence of matter. As such, time exists when matter exists. But God is not matter; God, in fact, created matter. The bottom line is this: time began when God created the universe. Before that, God was simply existing.”
While God is outside of our concept of time, He is, however, very much in our time. He hears our petitions and answers our requests. Maybe He evens laughs at our feeble attempts to understand how He experiences time. Most importantly, He always loves you unconditionally. That is a timeless fact that existed even before time began.
