Is there a test?

Traveling along I-95 at about 70 MPH, I am distracted by a large billboard which asks, “Are you ready to meet Jesus?”

“Hmmm,” says I, “Am I?” Of course, being distracted on that awful road is not a good thing. And I was traveling by myself, so no one to discuss the topic with at that time.

However, it did lend itself to some speculation about what the question really means.
On the surface, the question implies that there is a test or standards that must be met before one can “meet” Jesus. If that is true, who sets those standards? Does Jesus? Or the Father? Or the Trinity working in concert? Or is it man who makes this determination?
Do you have to be clean of all sin or faults to meet Jesus? Is there a specific class of sinners that Jesus would refuse to meet? Do you have to wear your best clothes and serve the best food? Rich or poor? Homeless or mansion? Are there certain words that need to be said in order to have Jesus come and meet with you?

After pondering this question for many miles, I came to my personal conclusion that belief in Jesus as God is very important, but still not the sole requirement. I cannot imagine Jesus turning away the confused soul who is searching for comfort in the face of tragedy; one who doesn’t quite believe everything that they have read or heard.
Belief makes the meeting easier, exciting and joyous. The dawning of understanding in one who is searching, can be equally satisfying. God does love all his children unconditionally. Even if they don’t know it!

So, yes, I am ready to meet Jesus. In fact, I meet Him every day when I look into the eyes of my family and friends. When I see a needy man at the corner. When I hear a tired child crying in the market. When I talk with people who are searching for the comfort that only a loving God can give. A God who doesn’t impose regulations on His acceptance and His unconditional love.
