Today, my sister Doris sent me a first day of school photo of her two precious granddaughters. Standing on their front deck, all shiny and smiling, excited to get back into the classroom, they were both weighed down with gigantic book-filled backpacks.
Do you remember those days? When the excitement of the return to school after a long summer of lazy days, kept you up all night with anticipation. Do you remember the curiosity that you had to find out how your classmates had changed over the vacation time? How much you had missed them?
Do you remember the healthy fear that you had about meeting the new teacher and studying new academic material? Do you remember how heavy those textbooks were? (Don’t forget the hand-made brown paper bag book covers.)
I think that these child-like attitudes are important for us whether we are 8 or 88. Greet each day with the excitement and curiosity of the first day of school. After all, it is the first day of the rest of our lives.
Do you think that this is the admonition that Jesus was giving when He said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 18: 2)
I am sure that there is more to discuss in this verse, but here’s a start. Become like a child in attitude: trusting but curious, accepting and loving. Remember that God’s unconditional love will surround you and sustain you. He promises!
