Martha’s Example

A recent sermon I heard reminded me about the story of Mary and Martha in the Book of Luke. (I believe this story is only told in the Gospel of Luke.) While Martha was busy with preparations for their guest Jesus, Mary was sitting at His feet “hanging on every word.” Martha was agitated that she was doing all the work, while Mary was quietly at Jesus’ feet.

Jesus’ reply to Martha’s agitation was that Mary had chosen the better part.
We know the parables told by Jesus are stories with meaning and an outline for how we should live our lives. Are you too busy? Are you listening for the Lord to guide your steps? Are you eagerly anticipating the stirring of the Holy Spirit within you?

God does not want us to be so busy, so preoccupied that we miss His direction for our life. As Martha fretted over getting their home in order and perhaps food prepped for Jesus’ visit, Mary omitted busy-ness for the chance to listen to Jesus. Their example shows us to not get caught up in busy-ness but instead to allow ourselves precious time to hear God’s direction, guidance and unconditional love for us.

You are so so right in that some of us are busy and busy and more busy always doing, I will admit that I am one of the worst offenders. Thank you for reminding us of the necessity to be calm and quiet and to LISTEN to HIM and what HE is attempting to say to us, an essential practice in our Christian life, a difficult task in our muddied culture.

    Blessings,
