As my loved ones and I say goodbye from a visit, it has been natural to say “I love you,” “Let me know when you get home” and to give the sign for I love you. In American Sign Language, it is your thumb, forefinger and pinky, raised, with palm facing forward.
Sadly, I have been at the bedside of someone taking their final breath on earth but fortunately, have been able to again say, “I love you,” as they near their exit from this life. Jesus told the thief on the cross next to Him, that He would indeed see him in paradise, I know my Lord will welcome me home, as my faith rests in Him. However, goodbyes are the difficult part for me. Even if I know I will visit my family/friend again (and there truly is no guarantee of that wish), still parting from them isn’t easy.
“Jesus loves me, this I know…” a song learned by many in their early childhood reminds us we are chosen by God, loved unconditionally and never have to say “good-bye” to Him.
Never tire of telling your friends, why they are your dear friends and how you love them and never tire of telling your family how much you love them. The final good bye is so very difficult and wrought with emotion. Let your love fill your heart so that it spills over into your farewells, your so-longs, your catch you laters, and even your goodbyes.
