In the 23rd Psalm, the imagery of the Lord as our shepherd is rich with gentleness and reassurance. He leads us, restores us, and comforts us. We hear the heartening words – I shall not want, I will not fear.
But today I was especially taken with the words, “He leads me beside still waters.” Psalm 23:2 These are peaceful waters. What do you see? Perhaps a calm woodland pond comes to mind, or the quiet ripples of a lake at sunset. I take a deep breath and try to emerge myself in such a tranquil setting, a place of perfect rest. Maybe you recall being in such a moment. But it doesn’t sound like the place where I live most of my days. Lead me Lord.
Then look a little closer. The Psalmist says “He leads me beside still waters.” He doesn’t just lead us to these waters, and he doesn’t lead us into these waters either. We are just led beside them. I picture a journey where we travel along close beside this tranquility. Lead me Lord.
Our God is with us every moment of every day. All our busyness doesn’t change that. But, our constant activity dulls our awareness of His presence. When we are still and “rest by the waters,” we return to a place of peace. Lead me Lord.
Allow Him to lead you beside the still waters today. He will not force you. You have the freedom to choose, to rest in stillness with Him, to be refreshed. Say yes!
Remember God loves you unconditionally.
