Proclaim the Glory of the Lord

Last Sunday, the choir sang the anthem, “Proclaim the Glory of the Lord”, written by Niles Borop and Dwight Lilies and arranged by Marty Hamby. As often happens the tune and the message have been in my consciousness almost since we started to practice it. It is a majestic song of praise to the Creator God. So, it is wonderful to have it in my head for a few days.

I was struck by one of the lines. It made me laugh when I first heard it. Then it got me thinking. Here’s the line: “…give honor to the Prince of Peace, for if we cease the stones will start shouting, …”. Now that would be quite an event! Can you imagine what would happen if the stones started to shout out praise to the glory of the Lord?

I’m never quite sure about the theological veracity of some statements which we find in musical lyrics. There is a certain amount of artistic freedom and interpretation allowed to make a point. This phrase certainly made a point for me. If I were to hear the stones shouting, I would pay attention. Who could resist joining in with the rocks, stones and boulders in their song of praise to God?

However, in my theological theory, the stones already shout out the glory of God by virtue of their existence. Their presence in our world is a daily reminder of the glory of God and the His creations. Even the tiniest of stones reminds me of the constancy of God, the dependability of God and the unconditional love of God.

Let’s all join in proclaiming the glory of the Lord so that the stones do not have to shout by themselves.
