When I was a child, Columbus Day was a big thing. We memorized this little ditty. Perhaps you did too.
In fourteen hundred and ninety two,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
It must have worked, because the date of Columbus’ arrival in America is firmly etched in my mind.
Nowadays, Columbus is just one of the explorers taught in school, and not even the first. Historical research has given us a bigger picture. But, there’s still a fascination with journeys of early explorers. We are fascinated by their ships, their crew, their route, the weather they battled, and of course where and when they made landfall. Their journeys were a struggle; they were often ill prepared.
I’m on a life journey now; you are too! It’s not always smooth sailing. I struggle against the pitfalls of life; and yes, I often find myself ill prepared. Just when one challenge seems to be “in hand,” along comes a totally new trial. I don’t know what to do. I’ve not been here before.
The sea may be rough, the days may be long, I may be weak. No matter, I pray that God’s strength will be mine, that His words will be mine, that His peace will fill my heart and mind. I can continue my journey in peace with God beside me, within me, and around me.
It’s an awesome concept, that God could be so concerned about your daily worries and needs. And why does He take such care – because He loves you unconditionally.
