Our family’s first ancestors to arrive in America were farmers fleeing the potato famine in Ireland. Their new home must have seemed so strange compared to the “old country.” But they wanted to belong in their new homeland, so when they were eligible they applied to become naturalized citizens. I’m touched to read those documents. They signed with an “X”. Unable to read or write, this legal process must have been confusing, even overwhelming, but they did it.
I also want to belong to a new kingdom, not just the kingdom of this world, but the kingdom of God. It’s a bit overwhelming too. A kingdom ruled by an omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent God. Wow! That’s beyond my earthly comprehension. And what’s more, that God loves me unconditionally. Now that’s truly unfathomable. I might not understand, but I would sign with an “x” if asked. I want “in.”
Ah, no need. The sign was already made – a cross on my forehead the day I was baptized.
“Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.”
You and I may live in Ocala, but we’re already part of the “community of Christ.” Humbly we bow before the Lord who so graciously welcomes us in. His love is unconditional, and it’s for you!
